Off The Beaten Path: Countryside near via Appia Antica

The countryside around via Appia Antica is surprising, as one is still in the relative center of Rome, but can spot such groups of sheep. So for those with just that extra bit of time in Rome, a visit here will make for a good change.

The fountain at the heart of Piazza Navona was created by Bernini, the most famous sculptor of his time. It is called Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (of the 4 rivers - Nile, Ganges, Danube, Rio Plata) and faces his major rival's church (the Chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone by Borromini), so some say the statues are looking in horror at it, although the church was only built later in fact. All the same, the visual effect is quite amusing.

Christian Rome: Caravaggio's Martyrdom of St. Matthew

In the Chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesci, there are three magnificent Caravaggio paintings, superbly located in the Contarelli Chapel. They were painted between 1599 and 1600. This is the one on the right, which is the first one can see when reaching the chapel on the left side of the church.

In the Chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesci, there are three magnificent Caravaggio paintings, superbly located in the Contarelli Chapel. They were painted between 1599 and 1600. This is the central painting, the most simple one.
