Mount Kinabalu - Kota Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu

This mountain is abound with hikers that trek to the summit. I did not go to the top since I had no time on my itinerary. It takes 2 days to climb as many stay overnight along one of the mountain hostels (Laban Rata). The mountain is within the confines of Kinabalu National Park (about 1.5 hours from Kota Kinabalu).

Rafflesia - Kota Kinabalu

Rafflesia

Rafflesia

This is the world's largest flower that can only be grown in Sabah. It is rare that one can see this large flower as it only blooms for seven days out of the entire year. However, I was luckily enough to see it near the town of Ranau. Since it was on private land, the owner charged a whopping RM10 per person just to see it. Apparently, no sightings were observed at Mount Kinabalu National Park. This flower was named after Sir Raffles.

Directions: Be on the lookout for the Rafflesia sign on wooden posts along any road.
