| The Church of St. George rules the views |
After 7 days of mountains and foggy lakes, we headed south for clearer skies and warm, salty water. What we also found was a complete change of atmosphere - and i don't mean the climate.
This is not alltogether surprising - Piran, long ago a part of Venetian republic, is much more Italian - maybe even Mediterranean in nature in comparison with the more austere (though glorious in other ways) north. It is more relaxed and laid back, narrow cypress tree-lined streets emanating warm air...and gelato sold on every corner :)People's second language is likely to be Italian rather than German (like in the north), but people spoke enough English for us to get by without a problem.
The architecture is clearly Venetian, minus canals, plus the sea :) Unfortunately, it is not as well-maintained as Venice (what with being less of an international tourist destination and all), which may add to its authenticity...but that's a matter of opinion.
What you can't argue with, is that Piran is a great example of how unbelievably diverse this small country is. |
