Barcelona Transportation

Metro: Fastest way

Getting TO/AROUND: Barcelona is mainly a pretty old city with a whole bunch of new structures and "barrios". But the most popular places for tourist are located at the "older" areas of Barcelona, which means narrow streets. Narrow streets equal, few parking spots, and few parking spots mean expensive.
There are a lot of cars also, since the high price of housing has made that a lot of people buy outside of Barcelona, but they still work in the city.
If you will be visiting for a few days and have limited time, don´t bother renting a car.
Metro stations are the best way to move around and the fastest way. You can buy a 10 ride card for about 6.00 euros which allows you to transfer twice within 90 minutes. You can combine the metro with the bus system also, and the new "tranvia".
With the public transportation system, you will save time, money and will be more ecological.

Getting TO/AROUND: Another cheap, fast and ecological way to travel within Barcelona is taking the bus.
Not as fast as the metro, but this way you will be able to see more of the city while moving from one point to another.
Sometimes the bus will take you right to where you want to go, and sometimes you should use a combination of metro and bus.
But what is for sure is that it is the best way to move around Barcelona while visiting.
Many people don´t even have a car because gas and parking is so expensive in Spain, and totally survive with public transportation.

To / From Airport: the most inexpensive way
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: There aren´t Busses such as "Airport Express" or shuttle in Barcelona....but there are 2 inexpensive ways to get to and from the airport.
There is a bus that will drop you in 3 places of Barclona: Sants Estació, Plaza Catalunya and Plaza Espanya(Near the Triumph arc) . And at all 3 terminals at the airport.
    It costs about 2.50
If you travel light, or are well fit to carry your suitcases into the bus, don´t hesitate.

    2. Train: There is a Train that will take you directly from the airport to Sants Estació and viceversa(with a few stops between and after Sants, passing by Plaza Catalunya, Arch of Triumph, Meridiana/Les corts etc) . At the airport, follow the signs, passing through a long hallway right into the train.
At Sants Estació, departures are anounced in Spanish, Catalan and English and you can ask, but it is also very well signaled. The price is also about 3 euros each way.
