Union Square, one of San Francisco's main retail and cultural centers, also refers to the actual park bordered by Geary, Powell, Post and Stockton streets. Set aside as a park in 1850 and named before the start of the Civil War as a tribute to the frequent demonstrations in support of the Union troop, the park got a major renovation and restoration in 2002. You can just buy yourself a coffee and sit there for people watching or walk among the nearby streets where all major fashion shops are located. This is also San Francisco's main theater district, with some historic, beautiful buildings housing the performances. Shows range from traveling Broadway and off-Broadway shows on limited runs to smaller local productions.

Fisherman's Wharf is one of San Francisco's most popular destination and features the Pier 39 shopping / restuarant area which main attraction would be the view and decoration. Fisherman's Wharf isn't more than row of seafood restaurants, street vendors, and souvenir stores with a major fishing pier and nearby to the rest of commercial piers. You can get there cable car from Union Square, It will stop 3 blocks before the wharf and you'll need to walk from there. While popular, you may want to avoid a stay of over a few hours in Fisherman's Wharf if you dislike crowds and "tourist traps". However, Fisherman's Wharf is great for a 2-3 hour (daytime) stop for fresh sourdough, seafood, and souvenirs for your friends back home. We tried to take the Alcatraz tour at pier 41 but it was sold out. But the boat tour to Golden Gate and around Alcatraz was nice enough.

The best attraction at Fisherman's Wharf is definetely Pier 39. Everybody who visits wants to come to this San Francisco landmark. Every good thing supposedly attainable here is much better and cheaper elsewhere.... If you want seafood, this is the place, you'll have lots of options where the main specialty would be clam chowder. Parking, as in all San Francisco sucks . A huge structure is available at very creative prices. Many ferries do leave from here, which is a worthwhile reason to stop briefly. Bring your kid's and they'll love the 2 story-carrousel.

Take a bay tour at Pier 41. You can also take a tour to Alcatraz but be sure to schedule with time as they run out of tickets several days before. Blue & Gold tours have a nice service at a cost of 25.00 per person. They will take you from Fisherman's Wharf to GoldenGat and back, taking a round trip to Alcatraz (no Alcatraz tour on this boat). A nice experience.

Unfortunately tickets were sold out for a week in advance. But it seems to be a great tour, I only circled the island by boat. Out in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, the island of Alcatraz is a place you can't miss.
