SANDGATE BY THE SEA

SANDGATE BEACH
Sandgate is located just a couple of miles down the coast from my home town of Folkestone in the county of Kent, its a pritty little seaside village with only obout 3000 people living here. Sandgate was put on the map i suppose from the building of its castle 450 years ago by Henry VIII in 1539. 200 years later some of the first houses were built in the form of ship builders cottages which are still here today, but the real rise in sandgates fortune was the establishment of the Shorncliffe barracks just up the hill, this brought the start of sandgate as a seaside tourist resort.

I always feel badly done to when a castle is not open to the public!!!

Great stuff! I hope to see the Martello towers in Kent someday :-)

The castle looks quite mysterious - I wonder why it is so hard to get into. I like browsing through antiques too even if I can't afford them either. We have few of them in Poland because of the wars.

Great page and thanks for that link to Sir John Moore. History is never boring to me!
