    Bridges: BRIDGE OF DEATH
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the famous bridge of sighs or known localy as ponte de sospiri. It was built in the year 1600 by Antonio contino and its aim was to connect the doge's prisons, or prigioni, with the inquistor's rooms in the main palace. Lord byron helped to popularize the belief that the bridges name was inspired by the sighs of condemned prisoners as they were led through it to there deaths. But actually the truth is, by the time the bridge was finally built the days of the executions were over and the cells wher occupied by petty criminals. You can get a guided tour of the bridge and the Doge's whice you can book by appointment, it takes about 90 mins and includes the prisons, torcher chambers, and the other rooms that normally aren't open to visitors, this is normally open daily from june to september. Please book at least 2 days in advance because the number of visitors is limited.

Campanile and its Views: THE BELL TOWER
  • Tip Rating:
  • Venice Campanile and its Views
  • BASILICA DI SAN MARCO
  • by whitecliff62
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • The proper name for this is the Basilica di san marco - campanile but better known as simply the bell tower. This tower is not the original as many people think it is, it was actually built in the beginning of the 20th century and it is an exact replica of the original which was built way back in the 15th century. A few things i bet a lot of you v.t.ers did not know is that Galileo Galilei showed off his famous telescope in this tower in 1609 and during the carnaval the bell tower used to serve as a stage for the tight rope walkers who used to entertain with there acrobatics.

A beautiful place but also pretty pricey so I probably won't come back her - unless someone else pays !! :-)

Cliff, I never knew that you had such an intimate connection with Venice!! You've been hiding things from me so you can have those Gondolas all to yourself! Great tips on this 'must see' city - but I think I'd go off-season, as you suggest!
