Ma terre Ladakh....La mia terra Ladakh....Mi tierra Ladakh....Minha terra Ladakh...Mein Land Ladakh....Nyos Gi Yul Ladakh...Mera Landakh....
Dear Fellow travelers!
Ladakh is in the Trans-Himalayan region of India bordering China, Pakistan and physically not far from Afghanistan and Russia.
That is where I was born at an altitude of 3800 Mts. Thanks to Info-tech Highway and VT….through this page I would like to give first hand information to any individual in need…and keep update with local news.
Birth of the moonland... Somewhere 40 million years ago when the tectonic plate of the Indian sub-continent collided with the continent of Eurasia, the 1,500 miles long Greater Himalaya was formed with an average height of 4600 M. According to the geologists Ladakh was the point of collision. Ladakh with the area of 95,000 square kilometers has one of the lowest population densities in the world; 2 inhabitation per kilometer.
Where adventurers are moonstruck... The feeling of being on the moon is actualized by the geographical features of the land with inhospitable mountains, the 95,000 square kilometers of rocky desert and the world of bewitching silence…. The Karakoram ranges to the North and the Himalayas to the South, Ladakh itself at the altitude from 2,750 to 7,672 m is the ultimate paradise for the daring adventurers…
Journey through the silk route… Leh is the capital of Ladakh and the pivotal of all the tours. The palace on the hilltop dominates Leh. Once it was the trading center for salt, spice, silk, carpets, dyestuffs and narcotics from Yarkand, Kashgar, China and other parts of the Central Asia connecting to the famous silk route.
The little Tibet Ladakh is also known as the land of Lamas. People practice the Tibetan Buddhism. The beautiful monasteries on the hilltops are very much like that of Tibet. The Thiksey monastery much resembles to the Potola of Tibet in its posture and grandeur. Monasteries of Ladakh are rich with antique statues, Thangka paintings, ancient Buddhist scriptures, wall paintings, coins, armor, weapons, precious jades and porcelain. The resonant chants of Lamas, the mysterious tantric rites and the mask dance of Lamas will take you to the world of spirits and spiritualism. |
| | My hide-out Take out my Enfield Bike and leather jacket ...I like to hide out in this small village...where lives my sweet memories and my personal beach (Just at the bank of Indus River 7 Meters wide ha ha...) Here some more info on my favorite village....
ALCHI GOMPA & VILLAGE: 70 Kms from Leh, on the banks of the Indus, is the Alchi Gompa dating a thousand years back. One of its walls features thousands of miniature sized pictures of the Buddha. Three large sized images made of clay and painted brightly are its focal attractions. No longer an active religious center, it is looked after by monks from the Liker monastery |
| | Lamayuru: The mystery land LAMAYURU GOMPA: The oldest holy site in Ladakh, it was a bon shrine prior to the advent of Buddhism. Also known as Yung Drung (Swastika) it is sited on a high promontory overlooking the village and valley. For sheer spectacle value no other Gompa can match Lamayuru. Make a wish here and see it come true..... (I did and came true!!) |

THE LITTLE TIBET THE LAND OF LAMAS THE BROKEN MOONLAND THE LAND BETWEEN EARTH AND SKY THE LAST SHANGRILA THE LAND OF HIGH PASSES THE HERMIT KINGDOM THE COLD DESSERT |
| | LADAKH IN WINTER Imagine.....Minus 20 to 40 Dig. Cels.
Everything closes during winter. Hotels, restuarants, shops, offices, schools and instituations...
The once busy and rushy Leh market seems deserted and ghostly town....
Few hotels with heating systems are opened partially....
And few bars for the local people |
| | Ladakh calling!! |
| | Bone chilling...Teath breaking...Vibrating humans It is more cold when the sky clears after the snow.
One of the favorite school competition we used to have was:
Who is able to close together their fingers!! |
