Cairo Off The Beaten Path

Off The Beaten Path: Cairo`s busiest square!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the Midan El-Tahreer or (The Lliberation Square),one of Cairo`s busiest round-abouts!
when war had started on Iraq,,this square is filled with protesters against the war!
It`s located infront of the Egyptian musuem.
It`s central of action in Cairo, bus stations, taxi staitions, around it you will find malls, hotels, cinimas, restaurants and many things to do.

Why do I miss it every time I leave Cairo??I have NO idea!!!!!!

    Bridges: Sixth of October Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • This bridge is the longest and the highest I have ever seen,(named after the battle between Egypt and Isreal in 1973).
It links Cairo to the 6th of October city, about 15 km and growing.
To me just passing over this bridge brings so much memories, starting from the time I arrive to Cairo(I have to cross ths bridge on my way to my apartment)til the time I leave Cairo. It can be very busy infact 50% of Cairo`s traffic gets on the 6th of October bridge(AL-Ahram weekly news paper).
many developments has been made on this bridge since it was built.

Khan el Khalili: The holy month of Ramadan
  • Tip Rating:
  • Celebrating the begining of the holy month of Ramadan for muslims all over the world is something very religious and spiritual but in Egypt in general and in Cairo specially is different......all the streets are set with lamps,,,,,all children has to have one of those lamps....going in the streets of Cairo singing the traditional song"wahawee ya wahawee".
    Something I will never forget!
I got my own fanoos (as locals call it) in Ramadan 2008.

Zamalek: A quite area within Cairo!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The zamalek area is one of the quitest places in Cairo,I always love to cruise around it.
This picture was taken from Cairo Tower...the area to the left of the picture is the Zamalek.
The big orange building in the center is the Marriott hotel.

    Bridges: Asr El Nil bridge!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cairo Bridges
  • Lion Statue at Qasr el Nil Bridge
  • by marimar_72
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Many times I have walked along this bridge side walk,,It connects you from the Opera house to the Samiramis hotel&Hilnan Shepard hotel.
If you pass though this bridge by night you will see many couples dreaming together and staring at the Nile under the moonlight.
And if you`re lucky and pass on a Thursday night(when most weddings are held)you will find a new wed couples having their pictures taken.
you can see the famous lion statues decorating the old "Qasr El nil" bridge.

Off The Beaten Path: Khan el Khaymiyya
  • Tip Rating:
  • My VT cousin showed me this place in Sep.2006...in all the years I have been to Cairo it never accured to me to visit a place so close to Khan El Khalil yet, much cheaper and less touristy.

To find the place, tell any local taxi to take you to Khan el Khalil, but be dropped off at the opposite side of khan el khalil, enter the magical world next to the big mosque, where you can find local crafts sold for a lot less than any other place.

Keep walking to the far end of the place until you reach a huge gate, where the city was surrounded with high walls and the gate is to protect it from it`s enemies.

sadly I had forgotten to take my camera with me that day,but I snapped some shots with my cousin`s cam and waiting to e.mail me my pictures.

The picture here is the only one I got from her so far!

I must make note of your restaurant tips before my next Cairo visit. I, too, loved Cortigiano.
