"A German settlement in the heart of Texas" Fredericksburg by Djinn76

Fredericksburg Travel Guide: 192 reviews and 555 photos

Not far from Austin or San Antonio, Fredericksburg is a popular touristic destination. People like to go shopping in the main street. However walking through the historical district is at least as good. The museum on the Pacific War also attract its lot of visitors.
You can't be in the area without a small hike in the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, you can clim to the top very easily and the view is simply breathtaking.

Quite surprising to find a part of Germany in the heart of Texas. It is partly due to the Adelsverein, an association organised in the 19th century to encourage and finance German immigration into Texas.

This association bought some part of the lands in this unsettled Indian country in the hills of central Texas where the Commanches were then the main tribes.

The first settlers founded New Braunfels in 1845 and then Fredericksburg in 1846.

Although the first buildings were of logs, the German settlers in Fredericksburg preferred structures of local stone on timber. Most of the immigrants had come directly from Germany, and thus the town inevitably demonstrated a strongly German character.

The "sundays houses" are also characteristic, they were the town residence during the WE of farmers usually living in the countryside.

I got close, but not close enough to visit. I love the German influence. The old homesteads are wonderful. Your page certainly has some great tips. Great park, what a shame about your battery.
