My company sent me there at the end of September. I “had to” spend 3 weeks in one of the best hotels of the capital!! Could have been worse…
Well, I was not too sure what to expect from a country located between Israel, Irak. Syria and Saoudi Arabie.
I have been pleasantly surprised. The city can easily meet our eastern standards. The roads are in a perfect state, the city is quite safe, not a single time I felt insecure. It is quite clean as well. The eastern part of the city is super luxurious and some of the houses there are simply breathtaking! On the other side, if you are looking for the lively atmosphere of the middle-east, simply go to the center itself. There is no real souk but the area is much more popular.
I was expecting to arrive in a very strict Muslim country but Jordan is quite open-minded. If you can hear all the time the call from the muezzin, there is also part of the population that is Christian. Don't expect to only see covered girl, you will see girls with bare shoulders as well …
At a touristic point of view there is not too much to see. In short, the citadel and the roman theatre. However the capital is pretty well located as a departure point for many day trips : Jerash, Death See, Madaba,…
If you are in the country, you have to spend at least one or already better two days in Petra : via the King's highway it is only 2-3 hours drive!

Really good Amman page. I will bear these in mind next month when we visit
Darat-al-Funum was a great find! I wish I had visited there. This is a brilliant page JF!! Taxi drivers are a nightmare all over the world, arn't they. An enjoyable read, thank you! (~_~)
Some helpful tips here for my upcoming trip, thanks! ;) Happy travels.
Many thanks for replying to my Amman hotel query! Your Amman page is very impressive and I'll be reading it fully over the next 2 weeks! Thanks again and happy travels!
Marahaba Jean, sorry you had such a bad experience. By law, all taxies should have meters. BTW, the yellow car in the Pic does not look like a cab. It is yellow but too old , no sign on the roof . Also the plates for cabs are green
