Trinity Monastery of St Sergius

One of the main russian religious centres and pilgrimage places, the fortified monastery in the town of Sergiyev Posad.

It was founded by Sergius of Radonezh in 1345, it resisted a siege by the Poles in 1608-1610 and from here came the popular armies that retook Moscow and also hosted Peter the Great during the Streltsy rebellion.

From 1946 to 1988, the monastery became the headquarters of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Around 40km north of Moscow, it is very easily accessible and is a great daily trip from Moscow.

You can also combine it with a trip to Abramtsevo estate, very close to Sergiyev Posad.
