You cannot miss the churches, either visible from everywhere or hidden in the smallest streets in the historic center. Faith, religion were always an important part of daily life and all the saint protectors of Naples, San Gennaro being the most important are still reverred.
While churches definitely point to heaven, the volcanic activity has always associated the city to the dark underworld. The region of Campi Flegrei was considered as an entrance to the domain of Hades in the roman period. This dichotomy of heaven and hell can be seen in all the aspects of the city.
Far from a clean and spotless city, Naples can be rough sometimes, showing its darker side. But the sights of the bay of Naples, cultural heritage, the food will soon let you forget any problems you might have encountered.
It has many ups, it has some downs, it is noisy, chaotic and whatever you will find it, just like real life...
Maybe charmed by the sirens from the Sorrento coast, Naples and its region has seen me longing to return. (And we did return to the region and Amalfi coast just the year after the visit to Naples).
Not only the weather, the sights, the sea, the monuments, just the feel of the city and surroundings - living in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius

I agree with you totally. We (from the Netherlands) have visited Naples in 2006 and will return next May. Yes it was dirty and noisy... but still a wonderful city. We're looking forward to it!! Regards, Tinscvil
