  • The Castle, on the site of Van Riebeeck's earthen - walled fort, was built between 1666 and 1679 in the shape of a five - pointed star, with walls of stone and earth more than 10 metres high.

Five bastions were built, one at each point of the star, and named after the titles of the Prince of Orange, the Dutch ruler at the time of the settlement.

The bastions are named Buren, Leerdam, Oranje, Nassau and Catzenellenbogen.
Each bastion contained living quarters or storerooms.Dungeons were built below sea level. No attack has ever been launched against the Castle.

Today the Castle is the headquarters of the Western Cape Military Command. It also houses a military and a maritime museum which may be viewed.

Facing the gateway to the Castle is the governor's house, known as the Kat.Its decorous balcony has a wrought - iron balustrade and is flanked by curved steps.
From the balcony proclamations and criminal sentences were read.

The Kat is now the home of a superb collection of paintings and antiques.

  • The Cape Town city gives one the opportunity to sense the spirit of Cape Town and traces the history from 1652 when the first Dutch Governor set foot on a beach nearby. You may also include a boat trip of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. You may choose to have lunch here as well before retiring back to your hotel for the evening.

Many attractions to see and things to do in the city as well as the surrounds.

  • Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens: These botanical gardens are devoted exclusively to South Africa's indigenous plants with around 9,000 different species, hence you will always find something in flower. During the summer months, the gardens also host a Sunday afternoon concert in the Mandyville Open Air Theatre.

  • Constantia Wine Route: A region of ancient vineyards and leafy forests claiming to be the birthplace of South Africa’s wine industry. No wine route experience is complete without a wine tasting event. BAOBAB recommends Buitenverwachting, on Klein Constantia Road, a family run vineyard whose operations immediately benefit the local community and workforce.

  • Cape Agulhas: Cape Agulhas is where the world’s great oceans, the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, converge. This southernmost tip of Africa is a rather desolate and windswept place, however its lighthouse built in 1848 on this treacherous coastline is worth a visit.
