"The Almighty Tourist Dollar" Torrington by canuckmike

Torrington Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 7 photos

It all started in 1995 with the Alberta government 20/20 Vision program. This program was for the small prairie towns that were facing a less prosperous future as with many small rural towns worldwide. Where do you see yourself in the year 2020 was the idea. Torrington, a town of around 200, took full advantage of this program and created a museum. Not just any museum, a Gopher Hole museum. You see Torrington has a real problem with Richardson's Ground Squirrels (gophers). These little guys kill cattle. Their holes in the ground are what cattle step into and break their legs. So it was always open season for hunting gophers. Since there was no shortage of dead gophers, they brought in a taxidermist and the museum begun.

This nowhere town that now gets visitors from all over the world is located about 30 km east of highway 2 (the main route between Edmonton and Calgary) on highway 27.

I loved this page! Thanks for sharing. In Australia too, the dying towns have come up with different ideas which have brought the tourists in by the flocks. Some people come up with great ideas!

How delightful, a gopher hole museum and gopher fire hydrants. I love gophers, but some people I know think they aren't so tasty. GRIN!
