On the banks of the Ping River, Chiang Mai is located in the Northern part of Thailand.
This site was originally inhabitated in the 8th century, and Chiang Mai was founded in 1296.
As the capital of Lanna, Chiang Mai flourished for many years. However, because of its close proximity to Burma, it suffered conflict for many years. Burma finally captured it in about 1558. After many years of struggle, Siam stepped in and regained control.
Today, Chiang Mai is a major city in the North of Thailand, and is a stark contrast with Thailand's southern regions. |
