When I think about Copenhagen, I feel a sharp pain in my heart--no, I'm not about to have a heart attack. It's the pain of knowing that I cannot magically return whenever I desire to do so. But wait..maybe I can?
As I close my eyes, I can envision a city of serenity and great charm, a city so magical it is almost surreal. Many things brought me to Copenhagen--a lost muse, some good friends, and Thomas Mann's Tonio Kroger. I met my muse while dancing to James Brown's Sex Machine in Espana, and this muse--this heavenly creature of quiet grace and dignity tortured me--I had to explore the city that produced such a remarkable human. I had to put my hands in its soil, get to its roots. Arriving in Copenhagen, I took a deep breath, then smiled a smile that never left my face during my stay in the city. I met VT member cachaseiro and we went to Nyhavn together--it was wonderful getting to meet him, and he had lots of colorful stories to tell!
I got together with some friends I attended Uni with in Spain, and we drank bottles of wine, told stories about people we remembered from spain..we talked about our insane salamanca adventures, then went out and sang spanish songs in the streets of copenhagen. Tonio Kroger? The greatest loves of his life lived in Denmark, and I suppose I was chasing their ghosts..searching...looking for some inspiration. Mann found it while vacationing on one of the danish islands..I realized that all of the inspiration I needed surrounded me..this city was a shimmering closet full of personal treasures. I hope to return to Denmark...who should I look for next time? Hamlet? The awesome skateboarder Rune Glifberg...wait..he lives in Huntington Beach now.. Kierkegaard, perhaps? :-) |
| | The good little tourist.. I spent a colorful evening at Tivoli with my friends. We ate candy until we nearly vomited, watched people on the rides, ate dinner, then walked around giggling like five year olds. My friend looked at me, grinning, and said, "Do you think the black licorice from Denmark tastes like blood?" What?! "While in Spain, I gave some black licorice to the American students, and they said it tasted like blood. They would spit it out and always looked like they were dying while they chewed on it." She gave me a sample.. did it taste like blood? Well, I'm not used to the taste of blood..no, it didn't really taste like blood. It was ok. After dinner we drank too much, went to the Round Tower, then ran around the city like misfits. haha!%s |
