A Lovely Day trip to Yelapa

by Ames24 - last update: Jul 4, 2004

One View of Yelapa
On my last of four days in the Banderas Bay area, I took a bus south from Vallarta and went as far as Boca de Tomatlán. There everyone had to get off and either wait for a return bus to Vallarta, or descend the long staircase into the tiny village, where you could grab a return water taxi trip to the otherwise unreachable shoreside community of Yelapa. Go early in the day up to as late as 11am for the trip out, and return on a 2pm taxi or 4pm taxi. When I boarded, another person getting on happened to be a woman from Yelapa, she was on her way home from getting groceries.

The village of Yelapa apparently only obtained running water and telephone service just a few years ago.

...Please bear with me for the fuzzy images, their digital pics of my prints. I think they should for surely still give you an idea of the place. :)

Short hike through the village up to a Waterfall

Upon arrival at Yelapa, you can choose to take a guided short hike up through the actual village to a nice waterfall, and then after be boated over to the main beach. We were greeted by some young man with a huge iguana looking to entertain us with this animal. If you wanted a picture of it you had to pay.

People are friendly. You will find vendors of Yelapa T-shirts and paraphernalia, there is a small store where you can pick up a bottled water if you've forgotten one, a small chapel (see picture below), and as you hike along the path of ground and stones, you're surrounded by jungle folliage, and if you look, plenty of sizeable spider webs glistening in the sunlight... and finally you come up to the waterfall. If you dress right you can of course dive in and get wet in the small pool there.
Simple but pretty little village church
