SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA

Licancabur volcano
San Pedro de Atacama is very poplular with Chilean and foreign visitors. East of the Salar rise immense volcanoes, some active but most extinct. Symmetrical Licancábur, at 5916m, is one of the most conspicuous.
It is not so easy to reach the top of this volcano, but you can find very profesional guide, who can help you there.
One of S. America finest museum

Museo Gustavo Le Paige

The Atacama is desert and paradise for archeologist because of its nearly rainless environment.
Its expalnatory panels on stone making are outstanding - it also includes exhibits on the Inka conquest and the Spanish invasion. You can see paleo- Indian mummies - like Miss Chile in the picture. There are also jewels, pottery, fragments of ancient weavings and paraphernalia for preparing, ingesting and smoking hallucinogenic plants.
The village is very small, but ...

Adobe houses

San Pedro de Atacama is a placid oasis of adobe houses, but you can find a lot of hotels there too.
People are remarkably friendly and hospitable for foreigners. You can rent mountain bikes and horses which is a good way to get around San Pedro and vicinity.
Be sure to carry water!!!
If you need good piece of advice call my daughter, she lives there more than 5 years.

Pros:"Chile is a mestizo country , of mixed European and indigenous extraction, and the indigenous tradition is still visible. In the desert north, once part of the Inka empire, are important archeological sites."
Cons:"I can´t say anything bad about this country."
In A Nutshell:"Chile features a great variety of environments."
