Heidelberg

Heidelberg may be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany. Small enough to feel like a "village" but big enough to be a city, Heidelberg has a population of 140,000. Surrounding the City are suburbs housing many American Army personnel. My own family has a long standing relation with this area, a couple having gone to Heidelberg with the Army and stayed to marry and raise families. (They are all back in the US now).

One out of every 7 residents of Heidelberg is a US citizen. The University of Heidelberg is the oldest continuously operatiing University in Germany. With 27,000 students, many of the classrooms in the Alstadt (old town) find students everywhere. Student pubs, cafes, and breweries abound and it's pretty easy to find cheap eats.
Lorna in Tubie

Visiting my daughter at University

As described in detail on my Tubingen page, my daughter Lorna is studying for a year in Germany. I'm very excited because next week I'm headed to Germany for a week to meet her and see her in her German environs.

We will be spending 2 days in Heidelberg, where she will be transferring to the University of Heidelberg next week (due to passing her language competency exams with flying colors!). Then we'll go on to Tubingen and Horb where she'll show me all her favorite things.

Check back at the end of February to see my photos and tips.
Heidelberg Webcam

Heidelberg Webcam

Now that Lorna is in Heidelberg, I've become obsessed with watching the Heidelberg Webcam. Of course, unless she is floating down the river, or climbing on one of those orange roofs I won't see her. :-) But it is fun to see what the weather is like when she's there. And maybe I can even see the top of her apartment building!

Update July 21, 2005: Lorna came home. She's so sorry she's not still in Germany! She loves everything about the country and the people. She can only think of one thing she prefers here (in California): free refills for sodas. Hmmmmmm.
