Santa Cruz has a fun old fashioned boardwalk. The great thing about it is it's free to walk around. You can buy wrist straps if you want to ride all the rides you want. Or buy single ride tickets (the Big Dipper roller coaster is $4.00 per ride). This is one of the few beaches in Northern California where you will actually see people IN the water. The Pacific Ocean is cold in Northern California.
The sand on the beach is for the most part clean and safe. Spend the day playing volleyball on the beach, eating "sand"wiches, and building sand castles. Here's a unique example.
