"Bello Positano!" Positano by Callavetta
Positano Travel Guide: 300 reviews and 633 photos
Positano is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Amalfi Coast. It's the stuff that postcards are made of with villas, houses, and colorful buildings tumbling down the hillside to the sea. It seems that every speck of land is utilized. The hillsides above the main road certainly demonstrate this with terraced plots of grapes, citrus, and other growing things all sharing the sparse space.
Navigating Positano is an up and down proposition. There are stairs everywhere. From the small port and beach it is necessssary to climb to the town's "main" square, in front of the beautiful church, in order to catch one of the orange local buses. These will take you to the main road where one can catch the blue SITA buses that go up and down the coast.
Traffic on the main road in peak season can be crazy. Altercations between drivers get loud and demonstrative. My first trip was by tour bus and when our driver had a heated verbal exchange with another driver, our guide pointed out, "Often drivers exchange compliments." Oh yeah!
- Pros:Unbelievably beautiful.
- Cons:Unbelievably touristy!
- In a nutshell:Unfortunately, today Positano's sole reason for being is tourism.

Positano looks so idyllic--I am anxious to revisit Italy in 2007...these hillside towns are so beautiful!
A little piece of Heaven is what I think about Positano, stairs and all.
I guess we can visit here when we stay in Sorrento, right? Looks very charming, a little like Portofino which is also extremely touristy.
