Arc de Triomphe: Arch de Triumph

  • I love standing on the island that the Arch de Triumph stands on and watch the traffic circle around and around. I watched a car like mine go around three times before it was able to work from the innermost lane to the next lane! Clomb to the top to watch the majestic avenues radiate from the circle.

  • Perhaps the most famous museum in the world, my daughter Jill hates the Louvre. "Divide it into 7 to 10 museums," she says "and you might have a good museum or two!" It definitely is huge. Something like 50 miles of hallways and paths, the building itself is worth seeing.

Tips for visiting: Buy a museum card and skip the line. Even if you don't get the card, don't be trapped into entering by the main entrance throught he pyramid. There are other entrances with no lines at all. Pick a couple of sections to see on each visit. My favorites include the Roman artifacts and the Egyptian exhibits. The huge majority of visitors seek out the Mona Lisa. You can't even get close to it, after standing in a long line.

  • One of my favorite areas of the Louvre is the Roman wing. Fantastic marble facades and floors have been reassembled in huge rooms of the museum.

  • The Champes lit for the holidays
  • by Callavetta

  • We visited Paris over the Christmas holidays and the Champes Elyses was beautifully lit up. After visiting the Arch de Triumph, we hung in a cafe sipping vin chaud until the lights went on and then walked the lenght to Place de Concorde.

Stand at the Place de Concorde and look towards the Arch de Triumph. On a clear day you can even see the modern Arch beyond. Take the time to stroll up the Champes (or down! it's easier walking) , looking into shop windows and stopping at one of the cafes to enjoy a glass of wine. Sure, they are touristy, crowded and expensive, but you're in Paris, my friend!

  • My friend Janet, in front of Notre Dame on our quickie Mother's Day lunch in 2000. We had a 6 hour layover at Charles deGaulle on the way to Athens and what better way to spend it?

  • This is a view of Notre Dame from the bridge behind it. It's an incredible cathedral. This is my favorite view of the famous Church.

Right across the street from where I took this photo is Ponte Vecchio, my favorite restaurant in Paris. (see my restaurant review). I've sent a number of people there and they haven't found it. It's so small that it's easy to miss, but if you do, it's regretable.

Behind Notre Dame, on the other side of the bridge is a very moving Holocaust memorial. It's worth taking a look.

  • "Sacred Heart" is the most beautiful cathedral, high on the hill. Not only is it worth a visit but the view of Paris from where it sits in Montmartre is unbeatable.

Pilgrims and visitors come from all over the world to see this Church. It's not unusual to see pilgrims, in a state of prostration, crawling through the Cathedral.

Take time to walk up to the dome for an even more remarkable bird's eye view of Paris.

    Louvre: Venus de Milo

  • Probably the third of the three most famous works in the Louvre and where the most tourists stop to snap a photo. (Heck, I took one, didn't I?)

Poor Miss de Milo has no arms! And the Winged Victory has no head! And Mona Lisa is so very small!

Now, you've seen the three bigs.... start looking at the building itself. It's far more interesting and something you don't see all the time in pictures. After all, Kings walked through these halls and lived out their day to day lives!

    MarieAntoinette probably ate cake here!

  • Winged victory is one of the most famous and sought out works of art in the Louvre. It's easy to locate with the use of one of the many free maps and floor plans of the museum.

It seems that all "roads" in the Louvre lead to Mona Lisa. Head toward the smiling lady and you'll see the more amazing Winged Victory.
