I made my first visit to San Diego in October of 2003. The city is very beautiful, with some beautiful parks and gardens. The climate is very nice.
However, I was also there for the worst wild fires in history! The air was thick with smoke for several days, and I could not go outside much. The wildfires caused extensive damage, and many houses were lost. The fire came within about 5 miles from where I was staying, but I was not in danger. There was a coating of ash on everything!
I have often heard about the California wildfires and Santa Ana winds, but this was the first time I experienced this phenomena. I was actually in Mexico just across the border when the fires started, and the winds were howling off of the desert. It was an eery site, as the sun and sky turned red as smoke clouds blew overhead.
Once the smoke cleared later in the week, I did get to do some sightseeing around the city. I visited the zoo and rode the trolleys all around the city. We saw the historic Gaslamp district, the new Petco Stadium, and Balboa Park, to name a few.

Take the Trolley!

Conductresses (or conductors) on Chinese buses can be pretty strict. Remember, no matter how crowded, always buy tickets in China! Best place to see pandas: Beijing Zoo.
