An Island of Incredible Beauty

by klarson - last update: Apr 13, 2003

While living on the Big Island of Hawaii, I took a little trip to the island of Kauai in May of 2000. I went with several friends.

I was struck by the vivid contrasting colors of the island. Red dirt and green foilage, huge canyons, walls of green going up into the clouds. Absolutely beautiful!

On a Movie Set

I went to Kauai primarily to visit the movie set of the movie "To End All Wars". The movie was being produced in part by David Cunningham, the son of Loren Cunningham, who started Youth With A Mission where I was working at. The movie is about some POWs in a Japanese prison camp, and how they deal with their captivity there. This picture is one of the POW camp set.
Napali Coast

Wow! What a View!

We drove up along Waimea Canyon, which is very beautiful. But the climax was when we reached the end of the road, which was at cloud level looking down on the Napali coast. This was absolutely breath-taking! We got there just before sunset, and we were literally at cloud level. We looked down on this incredibly beautiful scene!  I guess the red earth has minerals in it. China's Yangtze River Delta (e.g. Hubei Province) has red earth too, which is good to be rice paddies.
