After taking the Thai Airways flight into the mountains of the Mae Hong Son region, I found myself in the center of Mae Hong Son City. Mae Hong Son City is a small, but lively town. It represents a clash between the Thais and the Burmese minority groups. Mae Hong Son City is only fifteen or so kilometers from the closed Myanmease border and the provence contains Thailands Hilltibes; minority groups from the bordering regions of Laos and Myanmar. The city doesn't really have much to offer, but there are some impressive wats, and the Mae Hong Son mountain wat is impressive, but mimicks the one in Chiang Mai. Mae Hong Son is the gateway to Thailands northwestern hilltribe trekking.
