Forests in the Middle of the High Desert

You absolutely MUST visit McGaffey if you have time and like to be in the wilderness. It is absolutely nothing like Gallup and the surrounding area, it is lush and green with ponderosa pines, aspens, and oak trees.

The trail I like the most is called "Quaking Aspen" and it is about 8 miles long. If you just want to go on a 4 mile hike, go to the barbed wire fence and turn around. This trail is located at Mile marker 3 on Route 400. Take the McGaffey Exit on I-40 and just keep going on that road until you hit Cibola National Forest, it's just a few miles past that.

Address: I-40 McGaffey Exit, Mile marker 3 on Route 400
