I lived in Rome for 8 months and while I can't say more than every other book on Rome would say on places to go, I will say that my favourite hang-out there was Piazza Navona! What a bustle of activity going on all hours of the day! I absolutely loved it, and I miss that square more than any other place I have ever visited. All the gelati cafe's along the side make for excellent "people watching" spots, and I made friends with all the caracturists and portrait artists in my time there, consequently I came home with loads of huge sketches of my face, that the artists would draw when the weren't busy in the hope of enticing other clientele :-) In summer, there was a South American band that played every afternoon and I would sit cross legged on the cobblestones for hours watching them.
