Essential Travel Items

Here is a list of things to remember to take along:

Earplugs places get noisy, these come in very handy!!

Sarong (In hot countries anyway) Can be used as clothes, curtains, towel, beach bag, blanket.

Anthisan, Immodium, Mozzie Repellant, Rehydration salts.

Salt great to get rid of those leaches

A Flashlight

Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman

An inner sheet for a sleeping bag (even if you donıt take a sleeping bag) good for dodgy looking mattresses in hostels

If you are backpacking, its probably a good idea to have a chain to tie your backpack to the railings of the bus etc. And padlocks.

Spare passport photos.

A copy of your passport and travel tickets -not to be carried in the same place as original passport and travel tickets ;-)

A tea-towel. (instead of, not and, a large towel)

Zip up small kitchen plastic bags from supermarkets. They are great for carrying salt, fruit, or wet swimming costume etc. Or for holding different currencies, passports if you are likely to get wet..

Sunglasses, Cap

Study Footwear if going hiking

Wetwipes

For those of you with film cameras, stock up on film before you go!! It seems that UK and USA are much cheaper with films and developing.

Black plastic bag - serves as a raincoat & also a great backpack cover when its pouring down.

Water filter

Safety Pins.

Masking Tape

Toilet Paper

One size fits all drain plug from Travel Shops

Inflatable Travel Pillow

Water purification tablets

Bicarbonate of soda - One-quarter teaspoon of it disolved in a couple of ounces of water will give instant relief from indigestion.

And a hammok :-)

My site consists generally of travel tips and places to stay for the budget traveller. Although I did work on Rovos Rail, a steam rain that runs through South Africa and although it costs a fortune to travel on (£1000 for 2 nights everything included) its a gorgeous way to get from Pretoria to pretty much anywhere in S.A or Zimbabwe. If you're in the mood to spoil yourself... It even goes up to Dar es Salaam once a year.

Some Handy Websites:

www.seat61.com - where ever you are in the world, this beautifully set out website will tell you train times, prices, and where to buy tickets.

http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com - my Q & A bible, whatever I need to know about a place, questions are answered by fellow travellers almost instantly!

www.statravel.com - this is a very popular travel website that has really improved over the last couple of years and is now one of the best I have found - its great for looking at round the world flights etc and I always get my trvl insurance from them online too.

http://thisbeautifulworld.com - Some stunning travel photo's of India, Nepal, Canada, UK and Thailand, this is a friend of mine's website and he has done a great job in capturing the essence of the places he has travelled.

www.wunderground.com -This is one of the more informative weather sites I've found giving information on Temperature, Humidity, Wind, Pressure, Conditions, Visibility, Clouds, Length of days, Time of sunrise and sunset and also Moon Phases

Atm machines around the world:

http://visa.via.infonow.net/locator/global/jsp/SearchPage.jsp

This Website is pretty good if you are going to a place and don't know if you will be able to draw cash. Type in the country or airport or main street by your hostel and it will tell you where the Atm's on that street are.
