My favourite city in Crete
Favorite thing: Chania (Hania) is the capital of the Prefecture of the same name and the second biggest town in Crete, with a population of 60.000 inhabitants.
As for me Chania is one of the nicest towns in Crete with wonderful houses, parks and squares and a well designed town-plan.
Visit Public Market in the town center with grocery stores, butchers' shops, fish market and vegetable shops; Maritime Museum of Chania and the magnificent Venetian lighthouse, built on the 16 century and restored by the Egyptians.
Chania was the birth place of one of the greatest statesman of the new Hellenic Republic - Eleftherios Venizelos. There is a museum of Venizelos (the headquater of the Foundation Eleftherios K. Venizelos) located in his residence in Chalepa (Chania). During my visit the guide of this foundation opened to me many interesting facts from Venizelos life.
Address: Elena Venizelou Square, Chalepa, 73133 Chania
The lake of Agios Nikolaos
Favorite thing: Agios Nikolaos, capital of the Prefecture of Lasithi, is one of the most highly developed tourist towns in Greece.
It lies along the west of the Mirabello bay. The main road axis of the island passes right outside the city limits , connecting it with Iraklion (66 km) to the west, Sitia to the east (70 km) and Ierapetra to the south (36 km).
The sea in Agios Nikolaos is superb and the surrounding area of the city is noted for its sandy beaches and beautiful bays.
The landmark of the city is a small lake, known as "Voulismeni" that is located in the center of the city, at the foot of the cliffs. Its shape is circular with a diameter of 137m.
According to the mythology, the goddess Athena used to take her bath in this lake. The depth of the lake is 64 m and was connected to the sea only recently, with a canal opened at 1870.
Fondest memory: There are wonderful places here that were discovered, long before the area became a tourist resort, by charismatic people mainly by cinematographers like Walt Disney and Jules Dessain. Films like "Moon Spinners", "Celui qui doit mourir", the most recent "Beware of the Greeks", but also the TV series such as BBC's "Who pays the ferryman" are typical since the wider area of Agios Nikolaos is clearly presented in them.
The port of Rethymno
Favorite thing: Rethymnon is the capital of the Prefecture of the same name and it is built between two other large cities of Crete. In the east is Iraklion (80 km) and to the west is Chania (60 km).
It lies along the north coast, having to the east one of the largest sand beaches in Crete (12 km) and to the west a rocky coastline that ends up to another large sand beach after 10 km.
The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, small Venetian harbor and narrow streets.
There is always fresh fish to be found in the tavernas around the harbor.
Favorite thing: Rethymnon is the small Mediterranean town with its Renaissance architecture,Venetian fortress, museums and beaches. Prefecture is rich in characteristic villages and areas of great natural beauty, as well as caves and soaring mountains. It is home of the largest annual carnival in Crete.
The Wine Festival is held there annually at the beginning of July.
Another festival is held on 7-8th of November, in memory of the destruction of Arkadi Monastery.
The most famous place of this prefecture is Preveli monastery and beach.
Enjoy the sunset in Heraklion
Favorite thing: Heraklion is the biggest city in Crete (and fifth in Greece) with a population in excess of 120000. It concentrates most of the economical activity of the island, and is the main port of entry to Crete for the majority of visitors.
History is very much alive in Heraklion just like in most Greek cities. All around the old part of the city ,you can walk following the old Venetian walls that meet at a bastion, called "Koules", that dominates the old harbour of the city .
Favorite thing: The eastern prefecture of the island is centered on the colourful town of Ayios (Agios) Nikolaos. It is flanked by sandy beaches both on the north and south coast of the prefecture.
On the Lasithi Plateau the spectacle of 10,000 windmills is unique. Here is the renowned Diktaean Cave, the cave where, according to mythology, Zeus was born.
On the north east end of the prefecture is Vai, the fabulous sand beach embraced by date trees.
On the beautiful Gulf of Merabello here is Ayios Nikolaos, the capital of the prefecture of Lasithi, the leading tourist center in Crete with picturesque harbour and special beauty. The most beautiful towns of this prefecture are (except Agios Nikolaos) Ierapetra, Sitia.
The small and wild island of Chryssi (a few minutes by boat from Ierapetra) is one of the most beautiful places I've seen...
The paradise of %bBalos%b
Favorite thing: The Prefecture of Chania covers the west part of the island. It has an area of 2,376 km and approximately 134,000 residents. It is mainly a mountainous region (with famous gorge of Samaria) but it is also characterized by velvet beaches (Falassarna, Elafonissi, Balos, Preveli), particularly on its south part where it meets the Libyan Sea.
The prefecture of Chania constitutes a special place which offers amazing natural beauties and also various comforts, without spoiling its physiognomy.
%bKommos%b - excellent beach and ancient site
Favorite thing: The Prefecture of Heraklio lies between Lassithi and Rethymno. Its land follows the pattern of the rest of Crete mountains - bare at places, filled with cypress and oak trees elsewhere - plains, the most important one being that of Messara, fields covered with fruit trees of all varieties, sandy beaches and beautiful hidden caves such as the cave of Ilithias.
This part of Crete has been inhabited since antiquity and it is the richest part of the island in terms of archaeological sites like Knossos, Phaestos, Malia and the exhibits that can be viewed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklio .
The map of Crete
Favorite thing: Crete is one of the 13 regions of Greece. It is the biggest island in Greece and the second biggest (after Cyprus) of the East Mediterranean.
Crete covers an area of 8.336 sq.kms. The length of the island is 260 km, but the shore-length is 1.046 km. The biggest width is 60 km from the Dion cape to the Lithinon cape, while the smallest is 12 km and is called "isthmus of Ierapetra". A high mountain range crosses the island from West to East, formed by three different groups of mountains.
To the West the White Mountains (2.452 m), in the middle the mountain of Idi (Psiloritis-2.456 m) and to the East the mountain of Dikti (2.148 m). These mountains gifted Crete with fertile plateaus like Lasithi, Omalos and Nidha, caves like Diktaion and Idaion cave, and gorges like the famous Gorge of Samaria.
Crete is divided into four prefectures, each with its own capital - Chania (Chania), Rethymno (Rethymno), Heraklion (Heraklion) and Lasithi (Agios Nikolaos).
Favorite thing: Mountain villages, long sandy beaches, rocky bays, beach-bar-boogie & nightlife. There are magnificent mountain ranges, water-sports, tranquil locations and clean swimmable seas. The climate is one of the best in Europe and the cuisine is one of the most healthy in the world!
