The dead city of Mystras is located just 6 km on the West side of the town of Sparta. It was regional capital for almost 400 years until the fall of the Byzantine Empire. With inspiring churches and an impregnable castle it is considered one of the best examples of both Byzantine artwork and architecture.

Mystras is inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1989.
