Clock Tower behind and Marie Noel on the right - Auxerre

Clock Tower behind and Marie Noel on the right

Clock Tower and Marie Noel.

Favorite thing: There are many different and rather funny statues in the centre. The statue of an old lady will surprise you (look the picture - the right side). This familiar image recalls one of the most important French poetesses of the 20th century: Marie Noel. She was from Auxerre region and, in solitude, she lived a very touching, internal adventure, which inspired the magic form of her popular songs.

The centre - Auxerre
The centre

Favorite thing: Go up towards the town. Take the time to walk around and discover it. The town centre is superb, especially around the Hotel de Ville (Town Hall) and the 15th century Clock Tower. Here you can meet the "auxerrois". Their love of wine and taste for big style trading have given rise to a subtle, shrewd and pleasant spirit.

Cathedral of Saint-Etienne - Auxerre
Cathedral of Saint-Etienne

Favorite thing: One more fact: In 1429 Jeanne d'Arc came in Auxerre and was stoped next to the Cathedral.

Cathedral of Saint-Etienne - Auxerre
Cathedral of Saint-Etienne

Favorite thing: Saint-Etienne Cathedral is a model of elegance in accordance with the wishes of its designer, Bishop Guillaume de Seignelay (1215).
The sculptures on the facade, the design of the interior with its prominent chancel, the splendid stained glass windows.
It was built between 1023 - 1235.

Cathedral of Saint-Etienne - Auxerre

Cathedral of Saint-Etienne

The first step

Favorite thing: First of all you should go down towards the river, and take in the whole sight from the right bank, revealing the fine view. There are three great religious buildings: the Cathedral of Saint-Etienne, the Abbey of Saint-Germain and the vinedressers' church of Saint Peter dominate the Yonne which directs the whole region towards the Seine and Paris.
