Kasimov is an unusual place. For some reasons, which are too complicated to be discussed here, for 400 years it was a center of an independent Tartar principality in the middle of Central Russia. There is still a large Tartar community. Kasimov has one of the oldest monuments of Tartar architecture, long lines of wooden houses, and even a Muslim mausoleum under a birch-tree. Kasimov can be visited as a day-trip from Moscow, but in this case you need to have a car, or be prepared to spend a night in a bus. Otherwise, it could be a pleasant stop on a tour of Central Russia or River Oka cruise boat.
