Qusair Amrah is one of the five major "desert castles" in the desert east of Amman. It is nicely preserved and is a real castle - it served as a residence to Umayyad caliphs. The first caliph to use it was Khalid ibn al-Walid - the first caliphe in Damascus (he was preceded by four caliphes back in Arabia, Abu Bakr, Omar, Usman, and Ali). The nice thing about Quasir Amrah is that the original Umayyad frescoes (7h century) are still there, and some of them show bathing and dancing women. Qusair Amrah is on the highway from Amman to Azraq, behind Qasr Al Kharraneh, on the left if you are driving from Amman. |
