One pillar pagoda: One Pillar Pagoda
  • Tip Rating:
  • A newcomer to SEA gets first excited about temples and pagodas, only to find several days later that they mostly look the same to an outsider and more advanced knowledge is required to make distinctions. This one is really special - a small wooden building is put on the top of a stone pillar in the middle of a lotus pond. The pagoda was built in 11th century, destroyed by the French in 1954, and restored afterwards.

Things To Do: Ngoc Son Temple
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Right in the center of Hanoi, on an island in Hoan Kiem Lake. This is a Taoist temple, dedicated to three persons, one of which, General Tran Hung Dao, is famous for the first ever mining operation - against the Mongol fleet in the end of 13th century. The island is connected with the shore by a spectacular red bridge. The temple was founded in 18th century, but existing buildings are more recent. Consider spending half an hour, and try to avoid peak hours, it can get very crowded. Admission charge is 2K VND (12 cents).

Hoan Kiem Lake: Hoan Kiem Lake
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Just in the center of Hanoi, this lake contains two islands: one with the Ngoc Son Temple, another one (no access) with Tortoise Tower. The legend about a sword and a turtle, that gives the name to the lake, is found in every guidebook, and I will not repeat it here. The lake is fun to walk around: with the exception of the North end, the shore is very quiet and is a good contrast to downtown Hanoi. The Tortoise Tower is lighted nicely in the evening.

Things To Do: Tran Quoc Pagoda
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Tran Quoc Pagoda is a complex on the Southern shore of Tay Ho Lake, half an hour walk or ten minutes taxi ride from the downtown. One gets to the Pagoda via a dam, that passes a lotus pond (actually, a part of the lake) from both sides. The tower is seen from everywhere, and the best views are from the furthest yard, when the tower "grows" out of the roof.

Things To Do: Bac Ma Temple
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • A small temple right in the center of Hanoi and almost the only one without an entry fee. Nice lacquered panels.
