Vicksburg - Where Grant Really Made His Name The capture of Vicksburg was vital to the free navigation of Union supply on the Mississippi. Confederate forces in the town stubbornly held back, until the townsfolk burrowed into underground caves, showing their indomitable spirit to the last. When the town was finally captured by Union forces, July 3, 1863, the same day as the fateful last day of battle at Gettysburg, the townsmen were so sickened by the date that they refused to celebrate the 4th of July for the next 81 years -- until 1944, when the United States as a whole nation was fighting for global freedom in the Second World War. |
