the gray jay - Rocky Mountain National Park

Aggressive Flyovers

If you're not familiar with the species, the gray jay is a marvel in the Rocky Mountain NP ecosystem. Though ravens are the most boisterous bird in the park, and Stellar's jays are probably the most colorful, the true gangleader in the park's airways is the gray jay. Fast, agile, more able maneuver than the other two listed hands-down, this bird will swipe a chip from your hand before you can blink, and if you wish to take its picture, you can almost count on an immediate and continuous assault the instant you raise your lens.

Wild Animals

Although it is not likely you will see either one, the park has about thirty black bears and some unknown number of mountain lions. Observe park literature and regulations on how to handle a confrontation.

Be aware that the smaller rodents such as squirrels and chipmunks can carry deadly diseases. Do not feed or approach the animals. Keep wildlife wild!
