"A Beautiful Park, but an Overshadowed History" Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park by mrclay2000

The Blue and the Gray - Again and Again

The battle for Prairie Grove Arkansas occurred in December 1862, a month in which the woodlands look far different than their plusher summer verdure. Not far from the better known and federal battlefield of Pea Ridge, and far overshadowed by its greater rival, the environs of Prairie Grove (along US-62 near Fayetteville) offer a variety of attractions unknown to the larger park. The woodlands for one are far more scenic. Prairie Grove has brought together a large collection of local and period architecture and housing for its historical significance. Families can picnic and play football and frisbee here, which is impermissible at Pea Ridge, while the history buffs can walk along the easy-to-follow battlefield walking tour. In all, Prairie Grove is a lush pocket near a small town in the middle of an extensive belt of hardwood forests, pleasing to the eye and significant to American history. The battle marked the last time that either the Union or Confederate forces would use an Arkansas byway as an invasion route into more important Missouri.

I don't usually look for flowers but the insight into life long gone by is interesting :-)

Thanks for the history lesson. A good thing that there are still places where people can keep in touch with the past

If Scott is bringing the food and the frisbee, I'll just bring the dogs. This page is well done--shows that you have finely honed your VT page building craft.

I'll have to bring the frisbee and a picnic lunch! Sounds like a fun place to spend the day!
