A Village With Mighty Associates | caribou bust, Talkeetna Lodge |
Talkeetna is a village in every sense of the word, but with important associations. For starters, the Alaska Railway passes through town on its daily migration from Anchorage to Fairbanks, so visitors are treated to at least a glimpse of the train station whether they care what lies beyond or not. Second, many of the climbing expeditions on Denali start from this hub, and other flightseeing charters and river rafting services are available in town. The area itself is dotted with an endless number of beautiful lakes and streams, so fishing and hunting is a congenital duty for Talkeetna residents.
In summer, Talkeetna is reached by its own spur road, but commuters have to double back to the George Parks Highway to resume their drive to Denali. In winter, another road benefits from the frozen landscape to shorten the distance between town and the Parks Highway, if in fact you can even reach Talkeetna in the winter. |

Stephen-KarenConn Tue Jul 19, 2005 14:04 UTC Excellent page on a special little town. Very well written. | iandsmith Thu Sep 9, 2004 23:46 UTC Sounds like one of those classic "Gateway" towns. Very interesting. | herzog63 Mon Dec 15, 2003 00:54 UTC Talkeetna seems like a cool little down with some interesting character! | mcpangie Fri Nov 28, 2003 13:48 UTC Having grown up in Talkeetna I'd describe the place differently. Though it is a tiny town, in Alaska towns that qualify as "the bush" are those that you can't drive to. Your pictures are wonderful. |
