Kodiak's Easiest Retreat

In the past quarter century, Near Island has gone from a forested enclave unreachable except by boat to a developed area to receive Kodiak's economic overflow. The harbor doubles the immediate capacity for shipping. The Northend Park offers a retreat just minutes from downtown Kodiak, and the Fisheries Research Center is a sophisticated facility for measuring and tracking the growth of Kodiak's chief industry. Float planes for flight seeing and backcountry put-ins take anchorage in Near Island's quieter coves. In short, Near Island has grown up a great deal in the past twenty-five years, but despite the large but controversial bridge linking it with "civilization" (i.e. Kodiak), the island still remains without a restaurant or any lodging. From all appearances, this trend will continue as long as residents can have their way.
