Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Kodiak residents rarely know what to wear to keep them cool and comfortable. The visitor can commonly depend on wet weather, and hikers should be provided with good shoes having sturdy soles and cleats to some extent. Slipping on Kodiak's sand is customary.
Miscellaneous: Beaver fever or giardia lamblia is a common ailment on Kodiak Island. This micro-organism can cause painful stomach cramps, diarrhea and for the most unfortunate several pounds of involuntary weight loss. Use a water filter on all streams and lake water.

Luggage And Bags: A sturdy backpack with at least 3,000 sq inches of space will do for an overnight excursion or a few days in the backcountry.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Sturdy shoes with hard soles, and perhaps a pair of good sandals for stream and river crossings. Expect to tramp through the marshes, the creeks and occasionally the lakeshore after a few hours of piercing the interior.
Toiletries & Medical Supplies: Bring camp toilet paper. It is legal to burn toilet paper on Kodiak, but better on the environment if you pack it out.

Packing Lists: Combatting the Elements

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Given the fickle weather on the island, no one on Kodiak ever knows what to wear for the day. Even in summer, hikers and campers should bring layers that wick moisture (fleece, wool, special synthetics, etc). Rainproof gear is essential, or at the very least clothing that dries quickly. Head coverings such as a balaclava (depicted in photo) are normally not amiss in this wet, unpredictable climate.
Photo Equipment: With Kodiak's abundant wildlife, keeping your lenses dry is an essential but difficult task. Using a large ziplock bag will only collect the moisture to the lens. Either accept the elements for what they are, or use an underwater camera or special jacket for your own camera to overcome the humid conditions.
