Something for Everything

Our 10th largest state (at just under 100,000 square miles of diversified topography) also lays claim to the least populous, but the long list of contrasts continues many and varied. In the extreme southeast corner where the terrain is strictly a rolling flat filled with golden grasses, the idea of a MOUNTAIN is impossible to imagine. In the extreme northwest corner where the mountains of Yellowstone loom over interminable forests, the idea of a PRAIRIE is impossible to imagine. Most of Wyoming rests on a prairie however, broken by strange geologic formations until you reach the mountains to the west. Most of this area is windswept and inhospitable in the winter, while winter is never far from the mountains to the west.

Wyoming is home to two national parks bringing together over 4,000 square miles of habitat for some of the largest creatures on the continent. The thermal areas around Yellowstone are like no other, while the images of the Grand Tetons in the Snake River are hard to beat anywhere.

Wyoming has most of the wildlife that sends people packing to the national parks. Buffalo and elk are protected in the northwest corners, while pronghorn antelope are free to roam on the endless prairies. One of the plainest states in the Union in certain places, and in others one of the prettiest, Wyoming has (since 1995) been my favorite state in the Union.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Full of wildlife and diverse topography, home to two national parks
  • Cons:Cold and windy, inhospitable in the winter
  • In a nutshell:Like no place on earth!

When we were traveling through to see my sister in Laurel Mt, we saw so many herds of Antelope. I can certainly appreciate them. I am from Antelope Valley:-) Nice page!

Wyoming seems so similar to Alaska in many ways!

I agree with you whole-heartedly about Wyoming. For many years I dreamed of relocating to this beautiful state...then I saw Oregon and that is now where my heart lies.
