So much has been said of London that there is scarcely a quip to add, however as a lover of history, this place has as rich a mosaic of truth and legend as any other comparable spot on earth. Almost 1,000 years ago within these city walls, the inactivity of Ethelred made way for the loss of his kingdom to the Danes. From this seat of power, Edward carried war to France in the 14th century. In this arena the division of national religion defined itself through the reigns of Henry, of Mary and Elizabeth, having inevitably a direct and profound bearing on the US Bill of Rights. In chambers along the Thames in the 1680s, the crown lost its long debate over prerogative, giving birth and free reign to civil and individual liberties. To King George the colonies protested taxation. From Gladstone we tempted war while the states were divided. The Americans stood by the sides of George and Churchill, and today we stand side by side still.
To Americans, London is the glorious seat of an England that is our dear old mother. From this mother we were educated in politics, in self-expression, and national sovereignty. From her we received our language of expression, and to her we owe our undying thanks.
England has given the world some of the best in art and literature, some of the best in drama and poetry; has taken the stage in pomp and ceremony, and laughed at its gravity on stage upon stage. To me, 'This Land - This Realm - This England' is as stern a motto as it is illustrious. For its heart and soul in London, my first taste of Europe as an adult, this is my expression of thanks.
- Pros:Easily accessible, warm of welcome, and never-ending in its marvels
- Cons:Raw weather, overcast skies, often chilly, expensive to the core
- In a nutshell:One of the greatest cities in the world

This page makes me wish I'd explored London more when I still lived in the UK. Love your well written tips and photos.
This is an impressive page about the city that already has so much written about it! Love your writing style and some great photos here too.
Excellent London page for any traveller planning on spending time in London. Nice, thought-through tips!
Great general tips on London Very helpful with great pics
I knew there would have been details I missed in London and I knew whose pages to visit to find them.
There's so many great London pages on VT but this one stands out, especially in terms of history and information. On my way to check out your other pages now!
exclusive page! It shows all the things I need to catch up with on a hopefully second visit!
Thank you for your very informative tips about London. Your photographs are exceptional.
Will take your London tips with me on the road this month. Thanks!
Finally. I knew it. I had to start my surfing from your page. All my friends ignore UK when I need info so badly. Btw did you see the photo of Russian Sherlock Holmes actor at Baker street? I was told it's there.
