    • Watch out for Italians claiming to provide taxi services. They are generally just private individuals hoping to lure you into a big-ticket afternoon, but they can offer you nothing you can't do yourself. Better check with your hotel about in-city resources and tours. Rome is comparatively small, and easy enough to explore on foot. The two subway lines can generally drop you near where you wish to go. Though genuine cabs are more expensive here than elsewhere in Europe, they are another option.

    • Both here and in Florence, gypsies (and frequently poor Italians) will often try a ploy to get your attention on something while an associate picks your pockets. I had the pleasure of being asked for donations when a girl pointed to a pregnant friend (actually a bowl was placed below her blouse to provide a roundness). On another occasion I emerged from a church and was immediately hailed by one girl while her male associate hurried up to my flank, but I immediately stepped away from both.

    Apparently the police can do little or nothing about these transients, and you will likely be able to do as little with the police.
