The Best of European Capitals

The Eternal City Lives On

St Peter's at night from Ponte Sant'Angelo
If you chose only one place to visit in Europe, you would not regret choosing Rome above all others. Nowhere in the world are so many relics and ancient wonders packed into so small a place. Many spots that were familiar to Caesar may lie in ruins now visited only by cats, but many spots also familiar to Caesar are still largely intact. There are few spots in the whole world filled with so much history and so much charm as this delightful, walled wonder in temperate southern Europe.

While Paris and Venice have so much romance, the atmosphere is often tainted with a coldness in the former and a poor sort of commercialism in the latter. The nod of best European architecture and the most romantic riverside walks must go to Paris. The best squares, the best sculptures, the best fountains, the most beautiful churches, the best preserved concentration of historical relics and the warmest welcome in Europe all await you in Rome.

Though
Vatican City
is situated on the western edge of Rome, I have put the bulk of my Vatican City tips on the Vatican City page. Thanks for dropping by!
