"County Clare" County Clare by Krumlovgirl

County Clare Travel Guide: 702 reviews and 1,890 photos

I have visited County Clare on many occasions and have stayed for various lengths of time. It is probably my favorite area of Ireland and the Ireland that I imagined before I actually went there. Small dark pubs, winding roads, friendly people, beautiful landscapes, and traditional music-this is what you will find in County Clare.

Sites

Lisdoonvarna Home of the famous Matchmaking Festival

Aillwee Caves One of the most ancient caves in Ireland, located in the Burren.

Cliffs of Moher

the Burren Nature walker's paradise.

Poulnabrone Tomb

Aran Islands Visit Inishmore, Inishmaan, & Inishere.

Bunratty Folk Park Tour the folk park and then go to a medieval dinner at the castle.

Movies and books that take place in Clare

1) Born in Ice By Nora Roberts (a good romance novel about a woman who runs a B & B in a village that sounds a lot like Doolin)

2) Born in Fire By Nora Roberts (part of the "Born In" trilogy. This one is about an aritst who does glass blowing.)

3) Born in Shame By Nora Roberts (Last one in the series. In this one, an American woman finds love in Clare with a farmer.)

4) The Matchmaker (starring Janeane Garafolo as a woman that goes to Lisdoonvarna to do research on geneaology during the annual matchmaking festival.)

5) The Princess Bride (the Cliffs of Insanity are actually the Cliffs of Mohr.)

6) Darby o'Gill and the Little People (Although it was filmed in Hollywood, it is supposed to be County Clare.)

I'll add more as I think of them so look at this as a work in progress.
