House of the Seven Gables | House of the Seven Gables |
Despite the fact that most people go to Salem to visit the sites and museums of the Salem witch trials, I purposefully went to see Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “House of the Seven Gables.” I’ve always been fascinated with him as an author, as well as him as a person. There seemed to be something very tragic about his personality and despite the fact that he wrote with such an understanding of humanity he wasn’t really a very sociable person.
The house itself is one of my favorite historical sites in Massachusetts. I’ve been to the Louisa May Alcott house, Paul Revere house, Ralph Waldo Emerson house, and the Old Manse, but this one really has something different about it. Maybe it’s the fact that if you’ve read the book the minute you walk in the front door you feel as if you have been there before. I love the secret stairwell by the fireplace, which you’re able to walk up, that was added BECAUSE of the one made famous in the book. The architecture, especially in the attic, is beautiful and the views of the Salem harbor wonderful. In the summer the gardens are really nice and the whole museum complex is worth spending a couple of hours visiting. |
