Newgrange is a megalithic passage tomb that dates back to 3200 BC. Yep, it’s old. What’s interesting about it is that for the longest time nobody even knew that it was there. I don’t know if someone just stumbled upon it one day or what, but now it’s open and you can walk on right inside. A tourist center is located a short bus ride away (you pay there and then take the bus to the tomb) and it gives a nice history of the tomb and the way of life that went on when the tomb was being built. Oh, and it took about 300 people 20 years to build it, too, so it was no small feat putting this thing together. The passage and the chamber of the room are illuminated during the winter solstice sunrise. (Very difficult to get tickets to that…they do it by a lottery.) Since most people won’t be returning for this event the guides turn off the light and then shine a beam through the passage, showing how the sun would appear. Sounds creepy, but it’s actually really cool.
