I had always wanted to opportunity to visit Santorini. I finally got the chance in early June, 2004. My husband and I planned a weeklong trip to the island with a couple of days in Athens before and after.

We elected not to go through a travel agency for this trip. It would have made things easier, but seemed like it was more expensive, plus I didn't care for the hotels they offered. After arriving in Athens, we took a taxi to the Hotel Attalos. Despite what many had warned, our cab driver did not overcharge. We took the metro to Pireaus and bought ferry tickets directly. Later, on the ferry, we decided to upgrade to a cabin. Smart move. Being able to sleep in a bed was heavenly.

I had wanted to stay in Oia for a couple of days and Chris wanted to stay on the beach. So we split our time on the island. Three days in Oia and two in Kamari. We used the bus system to do most of our getting around and cabs for the rest. We also did a fair amount of walking after missing a bus stop. One day we rented a car and drove to Akrotiri and the red beach. It was nice to have that freedom of movement and explore on our time schedule.
