  • Right next door to the train station. Worth a pop inside to see the baroque interior and the frescoes by Tiepolo.

  • Ah, the wonderful sinking city of Venice. Flooding is a way of life, especially during the time we visited in November. The warning sirens signaling the high water blared a couple times a day. But no matter. A fortified spirit makes the day enjoyable anyway. Plus it is a sight to see the resilient Venecians go on about their business in hip high waders.

  • And the pigeons are very angry! Their square is flooded. No tourists supplying the free handouts. What is a pigeon to do under such trying circumstances?

Canal Grande: Ubiquitous Palazzo on the Grand Canal

  • By ubiquitous I mean common, everywhere you turn, a whole bunch of them. Not that they are in any way an uninteresting building. Look at the detail in the windows and facades. These are marvelous palaces that line the canal on both sides from St. Mark's to the train station.

  • Entertainment doesn't come much cheaper than a 3.10 euro vaporetto ride on the Grand Canal. Catch the boat at St. Mark's and ride to the end of the line and then walk back to St. Mark's. A great way to see the city by both water and walking--two very different experiences.

  • I just love the Italian architecture in northeast Italy. These building have a gorgeous setting on the canals of Venice, but they would not be out of place in Verona or Udine.

Canal Grande: Grand Buildings on the Grand Canal

  • What must it be like to be the occupants of these mysterious grand buildings on the Grand Canal. What can it be like to wake up every morning to the sounds of the church bells chiming throughout the city. To walk along the canals over the bridges and through the squares. Taking a cappuccino break several times a day. Drinking vino in the afternoon. Late night dinners. The pace of life is different here, but it appeals to the senses, I think.

    Bridges: The Rialto Bridge

  • An icon of Venice. Sure everyone heads for the Rialto Bridge during their sojourns to the Lion City, but it is one of only three bridges that crosses the Grand Canal and it really is a destination unto itself. There are many, many vendor stalls trying to sell trinkets to tourists, but try to get beyond the present day and think about the history of this bridge that links San Polo with Castello. The first bridge to span the Grand Canal it is now over 400 years old!

  • Chiesa di San Simeon Piccolo. A Venetian church undergoing extensive restoration. A fairly common sight in this city. The never ending battle against time and the elements. It is fascinating to drop in at the various churches and palaces that are undergoing restoration. The monumental tasks that await the artisans and the straight-forward way that they go about their business. It is good to know that craftmanship still counts for something somewhere in this world.

  • Look at any church in Venice and look at the facade. The works of art on the outside of the buildings are amazing. There are dozens of churches scattered around the city and each is as intersting as the next. The care that was taken in the presentation of these buildings is admirable.
